Lockheed Local Ratifies Contract; Strike Averted

Lockheed Martin machinists returned to work under a new contract this week, thus topping today's The 5 Things.

1. Lockheed Martin union workers opted to approve a new three-year contract late Sunday, effectively avoiding the threat of a strike at the Marietta aircraft manufacturing plant.

In a statement, the company praised good faith negotiations between Lockheed and the International Association of Machinists. The ratified contract went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday and covers about 6,000 employees in Georgia, California and other locations. Local 709 had urged its members to vote against the contract and go on strike.
