Marietta Graduates Latest Class from Citizens Police Academy

Twenty-nine residents spent the past nine weeks learning all of the ins and outs of the Marietta Police Department. This tops The 5 Things today.

1. Twenty-nine more Mariettans have a deep and better understanding of the thanks to the nine-week Citizen Police Academy program. Each week, they spent an evening learning about policing policies and new techniques and innovations.

The department offered extensive discussions about traffic enforcement, police patrols, detective work and homicide investigation. The residents discussed such topics as crime analysis, narcotics, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and crime scene processing.

2. at 6 p.m. today is offering a free program for astronomy enthusiasts called "What's New in the Universe? Starry, Starry Night." Retired educator and writer Chris Miller will lead the program and discuss the types of home telescopes and display photos from the Hubble Space Telescope. 3. Local crime fanatics have a new tool at their disposal: an online database known as Police 2 Citizen or P2C that collects crime data in any area of interest within unincorporated Cobb County. Types of crime available to search include burglaries, entering autos, thefts and criminal trespass/damage, along with data on robberies and fraud. An additional feature of the system allows people to retrieve their own vehicle crash reports.

4. Marietta Patch told you last month about RaceTrac's "Coffee for a Cause" campaign in support of the Michael J. Fox Foundation's efforts to combat Parkinson's disease. This week, the gas company announced that the 57 Georgia RaceTrac stores raised more than $130,000 for the effort, $25,000 more than its goal.

5. Today is World Hypertension Day, a day sponsored by the World Hypertension League to promote awareness of this disease.
