Marietta Has More than Fourth of July Events for Weekend

It's Thursday, the weekend is around the corner, and you have no idea what to do. At Marietta Patch, we have compiled the best bets for a great weekend.

Essential Marietta non-Fourth of July happenings for the weekend:

(For Fourth of July events, go here!)

1. Take the First Friday Art Walk at Marietta Square.  The fifth installment of this popular weekend event this year now features more than 30 merchants playing host to a local artist. And not only that, there’s the Artists Alley at which provides an exhibit of juried artists. And don’t forget to register for the Hip to Be Square drawing which gives the winner a $100 gift certificate to be used at any participating merchant on the square.

2. Stop by the and create a public art exhibit.  The Brickyard on Friday features local artist Frank Buckner and his new exhibit “Red, White and Blue—and Other Colors Too.” But Buckner is also inviting visitors to “paint the town” with an interactive display of Marietta landmarks. The Brickyard will provide the canvasses, brushes and paints, you just need to bring your own creative genius.

And while you are at the Brickyard, make sure you visit with local author and historian , who will have his new book on hand for purchase and signing.

For details of both events, visit the Brickyard’s Facebook event page.

3. Revel in the best of Georgia folk artists. Although this event coincides directly with the Art Walk, it is really worth a mention of its own. Thefrom 5 to 9 p.m. Friday will feature its first exhibit of legendary and upcoming folk artists with Red, White, or Blue: A Folk and Outsider Art Show.

The exhibit includes quilts from the women of Gees Bend and the celebrated works of the late Rev. Howard Finster. Other artists include RA Miller, Mose T, Ulysses Davis, Mattie Lou O’Kelly, Chester Hewell and the Crockers.
