Marietta High Puts on Musical 'Once on This Island'

The high school's spring musical and other concerts and performances top The 5 Things today.

1. The drama club this weekend is putting on its 2011 spring musical, a one-act play called "Once on This Island." This former off-Broadway production tells a tale similar to that of "Romeo and Juliet" but in Carribean island setting.

The show will play at 7 p.m. tonight and again at 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school's Black Box Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. For information, send an e-mail to mariettahighdrama@yahoo.com.

2. Country star Lorrie Morgan arrives in Cobb County tonight. Morgan has charted more than 25 country music singles on Billboard in a career that started with an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry at age 13 with her grandfather George Morgan. Morgan performs at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $30 plus fees.

3. SafePath Children's Advocacy Center is holding its 10th anniversary Hearing Children's Voices black-tie benefit at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The event includes dinner, entertainment and an auction, with proceeds going to the group's work to help abused children.

4.  The British Academy of Performing Arts presents its version of the classic "Beauty and the Beast" tale as a ballet and repertoire at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at The Joe Mack Wilson Theatre on the campus, 1100 S. Marietta Parkway.

5. It's National Quilting Day today. This day was created at the 22nd Annual Show in Lincoln, Neb. in June 1991 to celebrate this ages-old craft.
