Marietta JROTC Nabs Top Unit Honors

High school Air Force unit's designation as "Distinguished Unit" for eighth consecutive year tops The 5 Things for today.

1. Marietta High School's Air Force Junior ROTC program recently earned the JROTC Distinguished Unit Award, the eighth consecutive year Unit GA-20021 has earned that designation.

 The Distinguished Unit Award is presented to only a few of the nation's 884 Air Force JROTC units. The award recognizes units that exhibit outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force JROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.

The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are in the ninth grade or higher, physically fit and are citizens or nationals of the United States.

2. Marietta Patch is quite the film fan and loves the films from the silent era. Rare is the opportunity to see these nearly 100-year-old movies in a setting similar to its original showing. The has a mission this year to project some of the great movies from that era.

Today, the Strand is showing Sunrise, or A Song of Two Humans is a hauntingly beautiful 1927 movie about a farmer who has been tempted by a city woman to murder his wife. This movie helped Janet Gaynor win the first Best Actress Oscar.

The film plays at 3 p.m. Sunday with live accompaniment by Ron Carter on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ. Live organ pops variety show and sing-along at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for children, students, and seniors.

3. The Art Place at 3300 Sandy Plains Road offers its Summer Stars Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. today with an outdoor concert featuring the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts at Pebblebrook High School. For information to this free event, visit www.theartplace.us/

4. The Four Dogs Agility Show runs today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Jim Miller Park. It's too late to enter your own canine, but this is a great chance to see some talented dogs in action!

5. Make sure you thank a soldier or Marine or seaman or Guardsman or Airman or a member of the Coast Guard today as its Armed Forces Day. This day was created in 1949 to honor Americans serving in all branches of the U.S. military.
