Marietta National Cemetery Hosts Memorial Day Celebration

National Memorial Day Association of Georgia's annual event tops The 5 Things for today.

1. The National Memorial Day Association of Georgia and The Avenue of Flags will present their 63rd annual Memorial Day ceremony at noon today in the Marietta National Cemetery, 500 Washington Ave. Maj. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, current deputy chief of staff for the U.S. Army at Fort McPherson, will serve as guest speaker. This is a free event.

2. Remember... since it is Memorial Day, all city and county government offices are closed.

3. It's summer and students are looking for some jobs. The City of Marietta has some possibilities including day camp assistants at both the Elizabeth Porter and Lawrence Street recreations centers. Check the job listings here.

4. For the second year in a row, claimed the overall win for the Marietta City Schools'  "Save-A-Watt" energy challenge by achieving an 18 percent average energy-use reduction from September 2010 to May 2011. Total energy-use reductions district-wide for the period averaged seven percent and represented Save-A-Watt conservation savings totaling $65,000.

5. Sure it's Memorial Day, but it is also No-Tobacco Day. So don't smoke 'em if you got 'em. Wait until Tuesday.
