Marietta Slated to Get $1.45 Million in Transportation Enhancements

City gets money from state for revitalization of Atherton Square and development of Cemetery Trail and city's portion of trail from Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee River. This tops the 5 Things for today.

1. The city of Marietta recently received $1.45 million in state Transportation Enhancement mony, thanks in part to state senator Steve Thompson (D-Marietta) and state transportation board member David Doss. The money will go toward the Atherton Square Revitalization project ($538,000), the Cemetery Trail project ($512,000) and the Kennesaw Mountain to Chattahoochee River Trail – South Segment project ($400,000).

The Atherton Square Revitalization project involves the renovation of the Marietta Welcome Center. Built in 1864 as the city's first railroad depot, it was rebuilt in 1898 after Gen. Sherman burnt it down during the Civil War. Work will renovate the plumbing, build a new roof and use brick or concrete pavers on Mill Street sidewalks.

The Cemetery Trail project involves constructing a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail along Cemetery Street which will begin at Powder Springs Street and end at West Atlanta Street. The Kennesaw Mountain to Chattahoochee River Trail project involves a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail to begin at West Atlanta Street at West Dixie Avenue and end at South Marietta Parkway at Fairground Street.
