Mayor Tumlin Joins Regional Panel on Metro Challenges

Tumlin's role on The Mayor's Forum: The Next Wave sponsored by Urban Land Institute Atlanta tops The 5 Things today.

1. Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin joins a short-list panel tonight with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis for an Urban Land Institute Atlanta panel about challenges and opportunities facing metro Atlanta.

For The Mayor's Forum: The Next Wave, Tumlin and the other panelists will address the economic issues facing the region and how each are facing them in their communities. 

The event will be moderated by Otis White with Civic Strategies and held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, 800 Spring Street in Atlanta. The event is limited to only 60 audience members, but Marietta Patch will provide full coverage.

2. Marietta residents are invited to a special program at 6:30 p.m. today in the council chambers of to learn about programs that assist low and moderate-income families in buying a house or repairing their homes.

Representatives from the city's Community Development Division, Marietta Housing Authority, Cobb County Neighborhood Stabilization Program and Community Housing Initiatives will discuss their programs and accept individual initial applications for assistance at the meeting.

3. In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a Sexual Assault and Crime Victims' Rights Awareness vigil will be held at 6 p.m. today. The vigil will be held in Glover Park on the Marietta Square, and the public is invited.

4. Many Marietta schools are participating in The Great ShakeOut today, an effort to teach children and their families how to react in the event of an earthquake. The proper method is "Drop, Cover and Hold On." Look for Marietta Patch's full coverage later today.
