Road Opening, Park Groundbreaking, College Days

Here are things you need to know in Marietta for August 9.

1. There are several outdoor ceremonies planned today and tomorrow, so, hopefully, the weather will cooperate. The National Weather Services says today will see scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 a.m. Otherwise, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 89. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible. Tonight there's a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. with a low around 70.

2. The public is invited today to a groundbreaking ceremony at 6 p.m. at Hickory Hills Park at 400 Chestnut Hill Road in Marietta, followed by a town hall presentation on the park renovations at 7 p.m. at . For more info, contact Marietta's Parks and Recreation Department at 770-794-5601.

3. Cobb dignitaries will celebrate the Windy Hill Road ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Aug. 10, at Jim Miller Park, 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta. The ceremony will officially open two miles of newly-constructed roadway which connects Windy Hill Road to Macland Road. This project will hopefully provide longterm congestion relief for this area. 5. Many Marietta residents will be headed off to college in the weeks ahead. Last fall, a record 19.1 million students attended the nation’s 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities, an increase of about 3.8 million since fall 2000. According to the U.S. Department of Education, females comprised the majority of college students: 10.9 million females attended college in fall 2010, compared with 8.3 million males.
