Schools Out But Civic Duty In on Presidents Day

1. Marietta City and Cobb County students are off not only for Presidents Day but for the entire week for mid-winter's break. School resumes Monday, Feb. 28. The administrative offices for both the Marietta City Schools and Cobb County Schools are also closed today for the holiday.

2. Despite the holiday, Mariettans can still enjoy civic activities today, including a Cobb County Board of Commissioners work session at 9 a.m. in the third floor boardroom at 100 Cherokee St. and a county Planning Commission work session at 1:30 p.m. at 1150 Powder Springs Road, Marietta.

3. The Cobb Photographic Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Marietta Enrichment Center located at the American Business Center, Building 700, Suite 702 at 1395 South Marietta Parkway. Visit the society's Web page at http://www.cobbphotosociety.com/ for details.

4. The Cobb County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. today will air another documentary as part of Black History Month. Tonight's feature is Chisholm ’72 Unbought and Unbossed, which tells the story of the 1972 campaign waged by Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to run for a major party's nomination for United States President. Chisholm made her mark on American political history when, in 1968, she became the first African-American woman elected to Congress, representing New York.

5. Not only is today Presidents Day but International Mother Language Day as well. This day, first announced by UNESCO in 1999, promotes awareness of cultural and linguistic diversity.
