Six Flags, Back To School, City Council

Here's what you need to know in Marietta for August 8

1. Today's weather outlook calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon, and partly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 101. According to the National Weather Service, the chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Tonight will have a 20 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms, with a low around 74.

2. Enjoy a day of thrills and lend a helping hand as Six Flags Over Georgia hosts a School Supply Drive in partnership with Kids In Need, a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Park goers that donate six new school supplies will receive a coupon valid for 50 percent off park admission during a “Bonus Week” of operation this week, August 8-12. 

To receive 50 percent off admission to Six Flags, guests must donate six or more new school supplies on the day of their visit today through Friday. Suggested school supplies to donate include pencils, erasers, crayons, spiral notebooks, rulers, glue sticks, broad tip markers and pocket folders. 3. School starts for all on Thursday. Here is the list of this week's open houses for parents and students:

Elementary Schools - Aug. 10 – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics - Aug. 9 – 9 a.m. to noon.

Marietta Sixth Grade Academy - Aug. 9 – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Marietta Middle School - Aug. 9 – 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Marietta High School - Aug. 9 – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Ninth Grade Orientation, Student Open House); Aug. 9 – 7 p.m. (Parent/guardian Open House)

4. The will meet for an agenda work session today at 5:15 p.m. An agenda review session will take place Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by Council's regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. All meetings take place in the City Council chamber located on the lobby level of City Hall, 205 Lawrence Street.

5. In honor of back-to-school week: $7.2 billion was spent nationally in August 2009 on back-to-school clothes. Only October, November and December -- the holiday shopping season -- were sales greater than $5 billion, according to the U.S. Census.
