Vandal Drains Glover Park Fountain

Unknown culprit pulls the plug on the venerable, recently restored fountain and plucks out the coins, thus topping The 5 Things for today.

1. officials say an unknown person drained the Glover Park fountain over night and ran off with a good sackful of change. Folks enjoying the Brown Bag Lunch Concert series on Thursday were greeted with a dry fountain.

Workers found the fountain empty early Thursday morning with its pump still pumping but smoking. Crews told Marietta Patch photographer Kim Koch that the city would take steps to make sure such vandalism would not happen again.

In the meantime, it will take a few days before the will be in full operation again.

2. The Marietta Police Athletic League or PAL will conduct its annual fund-raiser today and Saturday behind the Chick-fil-A in the Wal-Mart parking lot in the Marietta Trade Center, 210 Cobb Parkway South. This annual fund-raiser is designed to raise money needed to conduct the variety of activities throughout our city for youths ages 5-18. The PAL program sponsors karate, swimming, Basketball, golf, mentoring and tutoring throughout Marietta.

3. Don't forget that Friday means another Brew with a View at the .Β  This week brings the Brothers of the Ridge, who are Chris Barber and Brian Rosen, members of the band Acorn Ridge. This duo act is a grassroots version of the rock/blues band that has been on the Atlanta scene for the past three years.

Brew with a View runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at the theater's rooftop terrace bar. Beer, wine and mixed drinks are available for those 21 years and older. There is no cover charge.

Also at the Strand that evening is a showing of The Princess Bride, a clever modern fairy tale about Wesley and the Princess Buttercup, at 8 p.m. Live organ pops variety show and sing-along featuring The Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for children, students, and seniors.

4. hosts a Cobb Master Gardeners lunch and learn at noon today. Cathy Lacy and Lisa Bone will present "New Uses for Ordinary Things in the Garden." It's free and you can bring own lunch. For more information, call 770-528-4070 or visit cobbmastergardeners.org.

5. Marietta Patch cannot pass this day up as it's Mike the Headless Chicken Day. As impressive as that may be though, we have a much greater chicken of our own.
