Young Jazz Artist Morgan Guerin at the Velvet Note

SUNDAY, May 18th.
Morgan Guerin is a 15-year-old multi-talented instrumentalist.  Growing up in New Orleans and Baton Rouge,
Morgan headlined his first sold-out show at the age of 12. Jazz has always been
an integral part of his life. At 6 months, Morgan’s grandmother Lorena
(also a bassist) gave him a pair of drumsticks. Upon turning 1, Morgan got
his first drum set. He’s been playing music ever since.  At age 6,
Wessel “Warmdaddy” Anderson (of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) gave
Morgan his first saxophone. Since then, Morgan has expanded his instrumental
repertoire to include alto, tenor, baritone, sopranino, and soprano saxophones,
bass clarinet, flute, violin, oboe, bass, and piano.

Morgan has had the great fortune of learning the language
of jazz from the Marsalis family, Donald Harrison, Christian Scott, Harold
Batiste, Herman Jackson, Tony DeGradi, Johnny Vidacovich, Darryl Reeves, Steve
Masakowski, his dad (bassist Roland Guerin), and many others.

Currently a member of the Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra
and Rialto Youth Jazz Combo (“RYJO”) at Georgia State University
(under the direction of Dr. Gordon Vernick and Kevin Bales), Morgan has
performed at the Atlanta Jazz Festival with RYJO since 2011.  In the
summers of 2012 and 2013, Morgan attended The New Jazz School in
New Orleans. Earlier this year, Morgan received the jazz workshop
scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts
this summer.
