OBITUARY for Joan Hames Sandmann

Joan Hames Sandmann, accomplished traveler, dog walker, fashionista, master-gardener, event planner and world's greatest mom, entered heaven's gates on September 26, 2013. The graveside burial will be held on Monday, September 30th , 3 pm, at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta.  The family will greet friends 5-6 pm at Community Bible Church, 200 Chastain Road, Kennesaw, followed by memorial service, 6 pm, with Pastor Jerry Willman officiating.

Joan was born in Marietta to grocery store owning and Deputy Tax Commissioner Luther C. Hames and his endearing wife, Patience, on May 13, 1930.  Despite being the baby of 6 and being born during the Great Depression, Joan remained the delight of her siblings (Elizabeth Kirk, Willis E. Hames, Luther C. Hames Jr., Harry O. Hames, Jean Dunn) throughout their lives.

A dashing fighter pilot from Marysville, Kansas, Joe A. Sandmann, swept her off her feet and she married her heart-throb on March 12, 1949 at the Officers Club, Dobbins Air Force Base. After enduring separation in the Korean War, the young newlyweds settled in Marietta to raise their girls, Gale and Wendy. When Joan wasn't working as a bookkeeper for her businessman extraordinaire husband, she dedicated herself to her girls. She taught them all the important things in life:  The Lord's Prayer, a demi plié, The Pledge of Allegiance, proper table setting, The Girl Scout Promise, ABC's, P's & Q's, a good pound cake, love of the outdoors, love of others, and most important to just be thankful.

Joan had a soul of compassion and an interest in helping others. Marietta Golden K, Meals on Wheels, Stephen Ministry, Terrific Kids, and Salvation Army are a few of the organizations she volunteered for. She was instrumental in her husband's recognition by the Cobb County Commission as McCollumn Airport's visionary, overseer, and developer. Joan continued as a flight student and Joe's co-pilot throughout the 40 years of their marriage until Joe passed away in October 1989.

Besides Joe, Joan had a lifelong love for: Pretty in Pink Azaleas, Richs Department Store, Chub Cay Bahamas, carpooling her grand kids, margaritas on the rock with salt, speed walking, hearts & spades, her many pets, First Baptist Church of Marietta, her faithful friends/neighbors, Orange Slice Candy, Allatoona Lake, and serving delicious coffee on her beautiful haven of a back porch.

Joan will be so greatly missed by her children, their spouses, and families:  Gale and Darren Willman, Wendy Basnett and L.B. Boyd; 9 loving grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 1 sister & brother-in -law (Jean and Jack Dunn), one sister-in-law (Margaret Hames), and a wonderfully large extended family.
