Hunger Games Challenge

The Cobb County Public Library System is offering teens an opportunity to fight hunger in Cobb County while having fun with its Hunger Games Challenge. The event will be held on Thursday, September 13 at 4 pm at the Central Library, which is located in downtown Marietta on 266 Roswell Street. Middle and high school students are encouraged to attend, and registration is required.

The challenge will be based on the popular Hunger Games book and movie, which tell the story of a post-apocalyptic society with rampant hunger, where teens fought to save their lives and for food for their district.  “We’d like to raise awareness of the challenges facing Cobb County’s less fortunate population and encourage teen volunteerism in the community,” says event organizer and library staff member Stephen Brock, “while having a little fun at the library.”

At the event, teens will be split into teams (like the districts from the novel) and will earn points based on challenges. Teens are encouraged to bring food items to earn points for their team. These items will be donated to MUST Ministries, a nonprofit that provides food and services to meet the basic needs of people living in poverty. “MUST is always in need of the most basic food items: canned meat, peanut butter and jelly, powdered or canned milk, and boxed dinners are appreciated,” says MUST Director of Marketing and Public Relations Kaye Cagle. “Any time we can hand a family a complete meal, it’s a blessing.”
