Be Careful When You Buy Furniture

Before you go shopping, you need to know what you are looking for. Here are some quick tips.

Today at a consultation with my client, we were discussing her interior design color palette and the importance of how to purchase new living room furniture. Before we went shopping I wanted her to be educated on what we would be looking for in furniture.

One of the things I told her is to make sure the frame of the furniture is made from hardwood.

Another tip is to unzip the cushions and see if there is off-white batting on both sides of the foam. This batting is called Dacron, and it is one sign of a quality cushion. Dacron helps the cushions to be more comfortable when you sit on them.

Most of the time, with a quality couch or chair, you will see an off-white lining surrounding the inside of the cushion. Because of this lining, you will not be able to see the foam and the Dacron that is attached to both sides of the cushion. You can still feel the foam, and you can carefully lift up on the Dacron to make sure it is there even if you can't see it.

It is important to make sure the cushions are reversible so the couch or chair will last twice as long. You will find that in some cases the manufacturer of the furniture only covers half of the  cushion with the main fabric.

Lift up a cushion on the couch or chair and look at the back of it to see if the main fabric of the furniture is completely on both sides of the cushion. Some manufactures upholster the back of the cushion(s) to have two separate sections.

You will sometimes see one half of the back of the cushion covered with the main fabric and a lining on the other half of the cushion. The manufactures are not expecting you to lift up the cushions and look at the detail. They are cutting costs to the point of hurting the life use of your couch or chair.

They are crafting or upholstering the front of the furniture to look great, but they are cutting costs and quality by not adding enough fabric to the back of the cushions.

These are just a few of the furniture and decorating tips I discussed with my client about buying quality furniture and being happy with the results. It is my responsibility as an interior designer in Marietta to educate and protect my clients.
