Lawsuit: First Baptist Canton ‘Enabled’ Sexual Abuse

allowed a fired employee with a history of sexual misconduct against children to return to the church as a volunteer, a misstep that led to the sexual battery of a teenage boy, the parents of the victim allege in a civil suit.

The boy's parents are suing the church, senior pastor George Anderson and former church employee Shawn Finch, alleging that they not only failed to properly supervise the volunteer and the children in their care, but tried to "downplay" the abuse in a meeting at the church.

A Cherokee County grand jury in April 2011 indicted the volunteer, 29-year-old Matthew Brent Sheffield of Canton, in the June 2010 sexual battery of the boy, who was 14 years old at the time. Sheffield faces two felony counts of child molestation.

Byrne Proposes ‘City of East Cobb’

Imagine if you will: Johnson Ferry Road becoming the official heartbeat of a true City of East Cobb.

Imagine once again a real East Cobb City Hall, most likely in that corridor -- no, not -- where citizens could pay for municipally-provided services and keep tabs on their mayor and city council.

And finally, imagine East Cobb police and fire departments providing community-focused public safety protection, instead of being part of larger, more sprawling county forces that may be understaffed.

This is the City of East Cobb that Bill Byrne wants you to imagine. Or something like it.

Crum and Forster Lives On

Preservationists attended Wednesday’s Atlanta Urban Design Commission (URC) hearing concerning the fate of the Crum & Forster building looking to convince more than three-fourths of the commission not to accept the recent findings of an Economic Review Panel that agreed with the Georgia Tech Foundation’s application to demolish the rear two-thirds of the Midtown Landmark building.

They did better than that as all seven members of the UDC ultimately voted to reject the panel’s recommendation and Tech’s application in yet another victory for Crum & Forster supporters over the course of the last four years.
