Michelle Nunn Is No Entertainer

When you look for some first class political entertainment in Georgia, you can’t beat the Republicans who are running in the Senate primary. They are funny but have no sense of humor.

You can’t beat these Republicans when it comes to goofy conspiracies. Agenda 21 was a favorite but anti-Common Core hysteria is the latest scare tactic to keep the right wing of the right wing dancing around like their pants are on fire. Denial of scientific facts is a given. Creationism is real but there is no global warming. Women can decide to get pregnant or not by force of some mysterious biological process.

When they have a debate, no one will be watching the Comedy Channel. Who would miss Rep. Jack Kingston maneuvering to get to the right of “the bowels of hell” Rep. Paul Broun. Rep. Phil Gingrey’s finest moment was his visit to Rush Limbaugh’s wood shed for daring to suggest the talk show entertainer was an entertainer. I’d pay real money to hear Gingrey again prostrate himself on national radio. Karen Handel is a political black hole where worthwhile non-profit organizations like Susan G. Komen’s organization to cure breast cancer go to die.

Michelle Nunn may have a sense of humor at home but as a candidate for US Senate, she is the only adult who has stepped forward. Public service has been the hallmark of her family. Her grandfather was the mayor of Perry Georgia. Her father was a distinguished US Senator. Seeing the need for ways that young people could engage and solve problems in their communities, she started the non-profit Hands On Atlanta. It eventually grew across Georgia and the nation. In 2007, the Hands on Network merged with President George H.W. Bush’s Points of Light Foundation. Last year, it was responsible for 260,000 projects that inspired more than 4 million people to volunteer, and delivered 30 million hours of labor valued at $365 million. President George W. Bush appointed Ms. Nunn to serve on the National Council on Service and Civic Engagement.

Wednesday morning, Ms. Nunn spoke at a coffee at Spring Wright’s house in West Cobb. 75 women and a few spouses and boyfriends soon came to the realization that Michelle Nunn is the only adult in the race. She is the only woman running who has graduated college (Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government).

She told the group that her 3 primary focuses are job creation, the debt, and education. Her preferred method of campaigning will be the same as Senator Patti Murray’s (D-WA) multiple campaign coffees. This is already working well. Ms Nunn has more individual contributors than all the Republicans combined and she leads in the polls. While the Republicans are getting on a first name basis with lobbyists, Ms. Nunn is getting on a first name basis with thousands and thousands of hardworking Georgian’s.

For Cobb Democrats, independents, and moderate Republicans who missed this visit by Michelle Nunn or the one this summer, don’t worry, she’ll be back.

I only wish that the Republicans could have a weekly debate. They do put on some first class entertainment, if you lean toward the Monty Python School of humor.
