Baby Boomer Women Are Nowhere Near as Shy and Diminutive as Their Predecessors

Baby Boomer Women are not remaining "invisible" anymore - they are active, vibrant, and making their presence in society known.

There once was a time when women who had reached what was known as “Middle Age” became invisible to society.

Not anymore! Women in their late 40’s, 50’s, & 60’s are now major movers and shakers in every arena of society. For example; we have Hilary Clinton(Secretary of State), Sarah Palin(powerful voice within the political spectrum), Virginia M Rometty(President and Chief Executive Officer IBM), Madonna… the list of famous Baby Boomer Women goes on and on.

What about the list of not-so-famous Baby Boomer Women who are making their mark in their worlds?

These are the women in our world who may(or may not) have already been through life’s  wringer once, retired and have chosen to embark on a second or maybe even third career.

These are also the same women of the sixties and seventies who spearheaded the cultural revolution and brought about extremely sweeping social reforms which changed the very face of society. Were they the hippies staging ‘sit-ins’ in the Dean’s Office at the local university? Very probably not.

They very possibly were going about their daily lives and influencing the world through their quiet, individual endorsement and embracing of the changing world around them.

And now? These women are looking to stretch their boundaries again and they are being noticed for it.

In 1972 Helen Reddy sung “I am woman, hear me roar, In numbers too big to ignore”

Consider that of the trillions of dollars that baby boomers spend on consumer goods and services, as much as 80% of that is influenced by Baby Boomer Women – yeah, that is a roar too big to ignore.

Realizing that roughly 50% of the cosmetics in this country are purchased by Baby Boomer Women, it is not surprising that cosmetics companies are looking to spokeswomen like Diane Keaton and Sharon Stone, while nutrition and healthcare companies turn to Jamie Lee Curtis, Sally Field, and Jane Seymour to get their messages out.

Who are these Baby Boomer Women who are once again rocking our world? They are every Baby Boomer Woman out there: they are the women next door who put in 30 years in the steel industry to ‘retire’ and start their own business making ‘one-of’ high-end aprons and handbags, they are the ex-Georgia-Pacific marketing exec who volunteers her time with high school students considering entrepreneurship as their career paths. And these are only two examples of how Baby Boomer Women are making a difference and not being invisible, obsolete, or irrelevant.

Women today are celebrating their individuality and empowerment with confidence and presence that goes way beyond the traditional characterization. In fact – the Baby Boomer Women who are out there, who are looking at their lives after fifty – are doing so with anticipation instead of fear, and in the process are not letting society cease to see them or relegate them to a rocking chair on the porch.
