What Does Being a Baby Boomer Woman Mean Today?

Being a "middle-aged woman" once meant a life of near invisibility - not anymore. But just WHAT does it mean when we say "Baby Boomer Woman"?

What does Baby Boomer Woman mean? Does it mean “middle-aged woman”?  Does it describe a woman in a certain light or set her apart from others in her same age range? Does it turn her invisible to the rest of society?

Well, how do you define middle-aged? And how do you apply that to women who are middle-aged?

It seems that a common definition of the “middle-aged woman” is a very illusive thing anymore.

Oh, there are still some vestiges and instances where the old stereotype struggles in its attempt to linger on – but failing miserably.

Giving up their seats in the stands as spectators, Baby Boomer Women are getting out and participating in life.

Baby Boomer Women are no longer content to quietly sit back and let life pass them by, wishing for and thinking about all the things others are doing but not getting out and participating.

These are women who see themselves as still healthy and energetic enough to get up, get out, and lead active lives.

Many are also replacing the long-held view that they ‘need a man to be complete’ with one of ‘well, it’s nice to have a man around, but I really don’t need one on a full-time basis’.

A recently published study has revealed that 44% of women 55 and above give themselves a 7 out of 10 rating when they rate their appearance, and that 60% of these women dress to please themselves.

So… why is it that if these Baby Boomer Women are all this and so much more – why are they seemingly invisible in the society they helped develop, shape, and drive?

Is it because they are no longer sexy? HARDLY! There are a LOT of very sexy Baby Boomer Women. I could go through a very long list of Baby Boomer Women who I consider to be impressive, intriguing, stunningly beautiful, and shudder-inducingly sexy… but I won’t – you see, I am married to one of them.

Does this invisibility come from a youth obsessed culture that acts as a counter force to a happy middle age for women?

To a great degree it did. There was a time(not that long ago either) that a woman over 40 was hardly seen in movies, on TV, or even in front of news cameras. Gone are the days of a woman being ancient history by the time she reached her 40’s. From Susan Boyle to Helen Mirren to Melanie Griffiths, Baby Boomer Women are in the entertainment spotlight. Each are making their mark, and each are showing that middle-aged women are smart, extremely attractive, and that their contributions are to be valued

Does this mean that all Baby Boomer Women are going to instantly change their worlds just because they chose to? No… BUT! They can if they understand what changes they want and what it will take to make those changes real and lasting.

Due to both lifestyle and attitude changes among Baby Boomer Women, there is a societal shift slowly coming about.

What works for one woman may not work for any other woman out there, but it can provide an example and inspiration to a hundred others in their journey out of invisibility.

No longer are women expected to remain silent and go quietly about “whatever it is that they do at that age”. Instead they are exercising their rights of pursuit of freedom and happiness in their quest to fulfill buried dreams, and in the process lose their invisibility.

How are they doing this? Using qualities that each and every one have honed over the last 40 or so years in their journey to where they are now.

Flowing together in no particular order these qualities coalesce as these women rely on their knowledge, expertise, and experience to reinforce their self-confidence as they accept the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. This self-confidence coupled with their passions provides them the courage to not accept anything as being ‘their fate’. No only knowing, but fully understanding what their dreams are and what it will take to make those dreams real in their lives is another aspect of these women’s successes. This clarity also empowers them with an energy to pursue those dreams and rule their worlds.
