Satisfy That Sweet Tooth

Sweet Treats, Sugar Cakes and Miss Mamie's Cupcakes serve desserts on Marietta Square.

I have a sweet tooth. There's no denying it. Since I moved to Marietta and began to spend most of my days on the Square, that sweet tooth has experienced an explosion of delights.

Miss Mamie's Cupcakes, Cakes and Such. I don't order cupcakes when I'm out. I just don't do it. They have a tendency to send me straight into sugar overload and taste like they've come out of a plastic bag from the corner discount store. Miss Mamie's has made me rethink my attitude toward cupcakes at restaurants and bakeries.

In short, they were amazing. Banana Peanut Butter, Carrot, Cheesecake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Devil's Food, Guinness, Margarita, Mocha Caramel, Red Velvet, Reeses, Rocky Road, S'more, Strawberry, White Chocolate and Yellow—there is a nice selection of cupcakes. Miss Mamie's also makes custom cakes. Cupcakes are $3 each or one dozen for $30.

I recommend the Banana Peanut Butter Cupcake, a banana cupcake filled with banana pudding and topped with peanut butter buttercream and a banana chip. The most popular selection at Miss Mamie's is the Guinness Cupcake, a chocolate cupcake with Guinness. The cupcake was fresh and airy with a deep chocolate taste and thick satisfying frosting.

Miss Mamie recommended the Mocha Caramel Cupcake, a mocha cupcake made with a Rev Coffee coffee concentrate, filled with soft caramel, topped with a mocha cream cheese and garnished with coca covered beans. I have to admit that this cupcake was perfection; the caramel was a light filling wrapped inside rich, airy chocolate.

Sugar Cakes. Sugar Cakes Patisserie is known for its desserts and for good reason. This small and intimate cafe is located on Marietta Square, near the Strand Theatre.

There is a wide selection of cookies, cupcakes and fine pastries. Chocolate caramel tarts, red velvet cake, chocolate banana mouse, black and white chocolate mousse, chocolate raspberry mousse, Manhattan cheese cake, southern pecan tart, tiramisu, hazelnut chocolate mousse, the Mirage and more. You'll find something you like here.

The most popular desert is the Mirage, a freshly whipped avalanche of chocolate, espresso and cream that made me sigh in content. The layered dessert was light and rich. I am also a fan of the Tiramisu. It's the perfect size for one person and has a great consistency, not too thick and not too fluffy.

Hours: Monday closed, Tuesday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner is served only on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sweet Treats. Bring the kids to the Square for ice cream while you enjoy a freshly brewed coffee. I find that the hardest part about going to Sweet Treats is deciding what to order. They start with vanilla or chocolate ice cream or yogurt and blend in ingredients. The selection of "mix-ins" is wide: Pop Rocks, Gum, Nuts, Protein Boost, Fruits, Wafers, Reeses, Peanut Butter, Marshmallow, Caramel, Rum, Cheesecake, Oreo, Brownie and the list goes on.

I'm partial to anything with Cheesecake, and the Kid-sized servings allow me to have a treat without feeling too guilty about the calories.
