Escaped Jail Inmate Back Behind Bars

Anthony Pierce, 20, escaped after a court appearance.

An escaped inmate from the Cobb County jail was back in custody late Tuesday.

Deputies said Anthony Pierce, 20, of Powder Springs escaped just after 6 p.m. as he returned to the jail from a court appearance.

Investigators told WSB-TV Channel 2 that Pierce was wearing a red jumpsuit and was in waist chains when he ran out of an exterior gate before it closed. Police from Marietta, Cobb County and Atlanta helped in the search effort, as did the Georgia State Patrol.

“I would like to thank the Georgia State Patrol, the Cobb County Police Department, Marietta Police Department and Atlanta Police Department for their assistance in locating the suspect,” said Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren.  “Due to the rapid response of the sheriff’s office, in coordination with these other agencies, the inmate was apprehended without incident and is back in custody at the Cobb County jail.”

Sheriff's deputies tracked Pierce down just 200 yards away from the jail in a wooded area that borders neighborhoods. Pierce was arrested in November on misdemeanor charges of fighting in a public place and disruption of public schools.
