Man Charged with Arson in Sun Inn Fire

The Marietta Fire Department is currently investigating an arson that occurred at the Sun Inn located at 871 Cobb Parkway North.

The Marietta Fire Department is currently investigating an arson that occurred at the Sun Inn located at 871 Cobb Parkway North. 

On April 2, at approximately 2:45 a.m., units from the Marietta Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the Sun Inn, according to a press release from Marietta Police Public Information Officer David Baldwin. 

Upon arrival, fire crews observed visible flames showing from the two-story motel. Fire crews extinguished the fire, which caused approximately $50,000 in damage, according to the press release.

A number of motel residents were displaced because of the fire, but the motel management was able to provide additional rooms for those guests, according to the press release.

Initial investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that the fire was deliberately set. Further investigation led Marietta Fire Investigators to a possible suspect, identified as Carlous Deushawn Banks, 37, of Atlanta, according to the release.

Banks was arrested on scene and was charged with First Degree Arson.  

Marietta Fire Investigators are following leads that may connect this fire to other fires in the Metro Area. 

The case is still under active investigation and additional charges could be pending.
