But whatever happened in the bathroom was outside their area of responsibility, Dillon said. The officers were assigned to monitor the basketball game and the crowd in the gym but not to patrol the school grounds or hallways.

A spokesman for the Marietta city schools had no comment on the case.

Chandler Brookins is charged with rape, aggravated sexual battery and false imprisonment, according to the Marietta Daily Journal, which said the teen was jailed for about an hour Tuesday before being released on $50,000 bond.

His attorney, Vic Reynolds, proclaimed the boy’s innocence and told the MDJ he will try to get the case moved to juvenile court.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the warrant says Brookins threw the girl to the bathroom floor, pinned her down and repeatedly assaulted her.

The AJC said Brookins is a member of the Marietta High baseball team, although he doesn’t appear on the roster for the varsity or junior varsity. His brother does play baseball for Kennesaw Mountain.
