Marietta Man Dies in Tuesday Night Crash

Police suspect alcohol and speed were factors in crash at Wallace and Gresham roads.

A 31-year-old Marietta died Tuesday night when he lost control of his minivan and crashed into a telephone pole at Wallace and Gresham roads.

said the single-vehicle fatality occured at 7:15 p.m. Investigators at the scene determined that a 1998 Dodge Caravan driven by Sergio Mendoza Leon, was traveling north on Wallace Road at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control, left the road and struck the pole. The vehicle was heavily damaged from the impact, and the driver was ejected and killed.

Police said the minivan also spun into a building causing structural damage and a gas leak. Two passengers, Jazmin Martinez, 35, and Eduardo Reyes, 20, both of Marietta, received visible but non-life threatening injuries. They were transported to Kennestone Hospital for treatment.

The gas leak was shut off. No other damage or injuries were reported. Police said alcohol and speed were factors in this crash,  but no charges are expected.
