Marietta Police Announce Promotions

Marietta Police chief Dan Flynn announced the promotion of four city police officers Feb. 26. Marty Ferrell was appointed to Deputy Chief. Steve Kish was appointed to Major. Jake King was appointed to Lieutenant. Jeremy Slatton was appointed to Sergeant.

"These four officers have achieved a major milestone in their careers," Flynn said. "They have a lot of very equally qualified peers, and the competition has been very tough for them," he said. "I've been in law enforcement for 40 years and I know a little bit about policing, and I can tell you these men have earned it and have done it the right way, the American way."

Deputy Chief Marty Ferrell

Ferrell is the new Deputy Chief of Uniform Patrol. He has served the Marietta Police Department for 23 years in Uniform Patrol on all shifts where he worked as an undercover officer assigned to the Marietta/Cobb/Smyrna Narcotics Unit, a supervisor and detective in Investigative Services, a supervisor and budget manager in Support Services and as major overseeing the police department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. He also served as major over Uniform Patrol Day Shift.

Major Steve Kish

Kish will be assigned to Uniform Patrol. He has served the Marietta Police Department for 20 years in Uniform Patrol on all shifts. He has served as a school resource officer and crime prevention officer and as supervisor over the Community Outreach Unit, M-STAR Zones 2 and 3, Honor Guard and the Gang Task Force Unit. He has been a member of the Risk Analysis Board, Oral Interview Board, MPO and Budget boards. He recently served as lieutenant over the Office of Professional Standards where he ensured the department complied with CALEA standards.

Kish has received the police department's Medal of Meritorious Service twice and won the 2009 Rifle Marksmanship Award.

Lieutenant Jake King

King will be assigned to Uniform Patrol. He was a member of the Marietta Police Explorers from 1993-1998 and served as chief of the Explorer program for two years before becoming a police officer in 1998. He has served the department for 14 years in Uniform Patrol where he served as supervisor and officer, a senior patrol officer, a member of the Community Outreach Unit, Honor Guard, Public Information Officer, a 12-year member of the department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, a detective in Investigative Services, a member of the department's Homicide Team, and sergeant in charge of the Training and Recruitment Unit.

King has served on the Awards and Commendations Committee, Oral Interview Board, Training and Uniform committees. He received the 2002 Marietta Police Department Medal of Meritorious Service.

Sergeant Jeremy Slatton

Slatton will be assigned to Uniform Patrol. He has served the Marietta Police Department for 10 years in Uniform Patrol as a patrol officer and served several years as a field training officer. He worked in the Crime Interdiction Unit and was responsible for handling all inter-departmental asset forfeiture cases. He has specialized training in search and seizure, asset forfeiture, introduction to law enforcement and commercial motor vehicle interdiction. He has also served as a crime scene technician.

"These promotions impact the great city of Marietta and all the citizens who live here," Marietta Police officer David Baldwin said. "All the decisions these four gentlemen make, along with their peers, will really have a great impact on everyone who lives in the city," he said. "We really appreciate all the family members being here today to support these four officers because as we all know, support is very, very important, and none of us could be successful without the support of our families that help us achieve what we have done."
