Marietta Woman Killed in Officer-Involved Wreck on Powder Springs Road

A Marietta woman was killed in a crash that occurred on Dec. 31, 2013, at around 5:45 p.m. on Powder Springs Road near Bellemeade Road in Marietta.

The Marietta Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Dec. 31, 2013, at around 5:45 p.m. on Powder Springs Road near Bellemeade Road, according to Marietta Police Public Information Officer David Baldwin.

A 1995 Oldsmobile Ciera, operated by Evelyn Lyle, 88, of Marietta, was traveling northbound on Powder Springs Road, according to Baldwin. Evelyn Lyle failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned left into the path of an unmarked 2013 Marietta Police Department Ford Explorer, operated by Major Cliff Kelker.  

The front of the Explorer struck the right front quarter panel of the Ciera. Both Evelyn Lyle and her front passenger, Michael Lyle, 66, were rushed to Kennestone Hospital, according to Baldwin. 

Evelyn Lyle succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Baldwin said. Michael Lyle is currently listed in critical condition. 

Major Kelker did not suffer any injuries in the crash. 

No charges are pending at this time, and the investigation remains active.
