Acworth Man Killed in Hit and Run

The Georgia State Patrol is asking for the public's help in locating a vehicle that struck and killed an Acworth man early Saturday on Kellogg Creek Road in Cherokee County.

Larry Allen Ward of Acworth, 31, was killed when he was walking along the road near Romain Drive just after midnight.

Byrne Endorsed By Taxpayers Group

Former Cobb commission chairman Bill Byrne, who's seeking to get back his old job, received a significant endorsement today from a leading taxpayer advocacy group. 

The Cobb Taxpayers Association announced this morning , who served as chairman from 1992-2002, because "his leadership would represent a refreshing and much needed change in direction from the County's current Chairman.”

Acworth Health Park Opens in a Week

The first floor of the Acworth Health Park, which includes the Urgent Care Center, imaging and lab services and the retail pharmacy, will open on Monday, July 16.

The WellStar facility will offer an array of the most advanced imaging services in the region. Along with digital mammography, digital X-Ray, bone densitometry, and ultrasound, the center will provide the lowest dose CT scan available and a high field, open MRI with ambient features.

Powder Springs Paramedic School Under Investigation

A Powder Springs paramedic school is under investigation by the Georgia Department of Public Health after a "large number" of students complained to the agency, WSB-TV reports.

One student of ProMedics EMS Academy told the TV station he paid $5,000 for a six-month training program, but more than a year later, he hasn't been able to schedule a part of the training.

Neighbor Says Murdered Woman Had Recently Bought Gun

The woman found dead in her Mableton home Saturday night may have recently purchased a gun. Cobb Police charged Thomas Schwartz, the live-in boyfriend of Janice Oates, with her murder.

Schwartz has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault.
