Thousands Allegedly Stolen from Elderly Marietta Pair

Antione Maurice Davis was arrested Saturday at his Smyrna home on charges of theft by taking and abuse, neglect, or expoitation of the elderly. Both are felonies.

An elderly man and woman from Marietta relied on a Smyrna man for their day-to-day care.

Juanita Calvert and Phillip Van Zandt were so dependent on Antione Maurice Davis that they trusted him to enter the correct amount on his own paycheck.

While all parties agreed to a $1,500 bi-monthly salary, Davis allegedly got away with more than that during an 11-week period from Dec. 19 to March 1, according to a Cobb County criminal warrant.

Her eyesight failing, Calvert had no idea that she affixed her signature to 18 checks totaling $41,690. All of the money was drawn from the joint Wells Fargo account of Calvert and Van Zandt, records show.

"The victim did not normally check her bank statements and on this occasion, she reviewed her bank statement," said Col. Milton Beck, the spokesman for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office. "The statement reflected an amount in her account she thought was rather low and (she) went to her bank with a family member. Unfortunately she trusted Mr. Davis."
