Two Die in New Year's Accident in Marietta

A Camaro that Cobb Police said fled a traffic stop landed upside down in a ditch near South Cobb Drive, ejecting both occupants.

Two Marietta men were killed early New Year's Day morning in a one-car accident after fleeing a traffic stop.

Cobb Police Sgt. Dana Pierce said Marquis Parker, 28, and Fernando Edwards, 31, were killed after being ejected from a black 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS that ran through an intersection at South Cobb Drive and Westside Drive, tumbled down an embankment and landed upside down in a ditch.

The Camaro had been pulled over by Marietta Police for a traffic offense around 5:15 a.m. at Westside Drive and Sandtown Road, according to Pierce.

But as an officer approached the vehicle, the Camaro fled eastbound on Westside, then the driver lost control as it passed through the South Cobb Drive intersection and left the road, according to police.

The Marietta officer returned to his patrol car and did not immediately pursue, Pierce said.

Pierce said that Parker, the driver, and Edwards, a front passenger, were not wearing seat belts, and that speed and alcohol also contributed to the accident.

Pierce said anyone with further information about the accident is asked to call Cobb Police at 770-499-3987.
