Flash Poll: Georgia Republicans Enthusiastic about Paul Ryan Pick for VP

A Patch panel of GOP elected officials and activists say they see Ryan as a strong conservative.

A Patch poll conducted Saturday found that Republican respondents are enthusiastic about Mitt Romney’s decision to tap Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate.

Most of those who took part in the nonscientific poll agreed that Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, will ‘galvanize’ support for Romney in the Peach State.

“He is actually presenting America with ideas and a vision,” noted one of the respondents. “Whether you agree with all of those ideas or not, at least he is offering up something for debate.”

Twenty-eight Republican elected officials, candidates and activists completed the survey. Sixty four percent of respondents agreed with the statement “Mitt Romney’s decision to choose Paul Ryan as his VP candidate will galvanize Georgia Republicans.”

Responses were a bit more tempered on whether the selection would help Romney win over undecided voters in Georgia: 39 percent strongly agreed and 36 percent said they somewhat agreed.

Respondents overwhelmingly disagreed with the notion that the Ryan pick would allow Democrats a chance to win the presidential race by running against the Congressman’s budget plans, especially his proposal for Medicare: 54 percent strongly disagreed and 25 percent said they somewhat disagree with that notion.

Reaction was a lot more mixed on whether adding Ryan to the ticket would galvanize Georgia Democrats: 43 percent said they somewhat disagreed or strongly disagreed and 39 percent said they somewhat agreed or strongly agreed.

Here are some excerpts from the respondents' comments:

  • “A young, wildly intelligent and articulate conservative. He has already proven himself and shown he can make the tough decisions.”
  • “Paul Ryan's strengths balance Romney's weaknesses.  Ryan is a smart, issues focused conservative.  He compliments Romney's reputation as a liberal conservative.  Romney's reputation as a crony capitalist will be balanced by Ryan's free market ideology where no one gets special tax status, not even Bain.”
  • “We now have a clear choice from those who want to see us move more to a socialized government and those who believe that government is not the answer.”

Himot, 9-9-9 might be a great tax plan...if you live in Sim City. However, it has no basis in reality. I can assure you the Romney's didn't give 18% of their wealth to anyone, although they may have that much in Swiss bank accounts. Their 2010 tax returns show they did tithe approximately 10% of their income to the Mormon Church as all Mormons are required to do (they're sticklers about that kind of thing). That was about $4.5 million. They gave another $500k to their own charitable foundation which looks about as fishy as that $100 million IRA.

Try a substantive response not ridicule, Phil. Romney was caught lying about where he filed his taxes in order to be eligible to run for governor. He had filed in Utah (where he saved LOTS of money) instead of Massachusetts. At first he claimed he didn't know how this had happened. Then he was caught trying to pay taxes in Massachusetts retroactively. There still is no proof that he paid the Massachusetts taxes because throughout every run for office he has refused to release his returns. And why are seeing the returns so important? Transparency in one's financial dealings is important for all candidates, but especially for the President who is the Commander in Chief. I mean a regular worker can't get a basic office job without having a credit check done. Try getting a mortgage without a full and complete vetting of your finances. This man could be the President--he should be MORE forthcoming not less! Also Romney’s personal wealth is historically unprecedented for the POTUS. If elected he is going to be making economic policy, specifically tax policy for ALL of us. How he pays his own taxes is linked to the way he formulates tax policy---how much would he personally benefit from his own tax plan? We have a right to know this before we go to the polls.

Brian Crawford 9-9-9 is a great plan , but like many you have not read up on it and the way it gets us to the fair tax. Records show that Mitt has given 18% of his earnings to charites. Go back to playing your Sims city game while the rest of us deal in reality. Obama reminds me of the credit card ad that asks "What is in your Wallet" .

Frank, you don't know how they would vote. Nice straw man. I find it interesting that you don't care if there is voter fraud, in fact you seem rather comfortable with it. Most Hispanics typically voted Republican because our values are the same. Most Hispanics relate to the Catholic faith and values of family, faith and honesty. The Democratic Party no longer tolerates faith and the traditional family. It is interesting that Democrats have to buy votes instead of win them.

Why is it that if one disagrees with someones opinion of a particular candidate, the name calling, over talking the facts and omitting the truth becomes the only way some feel that they need to get their point across? The hard truth is that Mitt is not for the people of this country only a very small %. He just wants to be President. He has a campaign staff who take pride in lying, rudeness and downright disregard for respecting the office of the Presidency. The fact that Mitt is a successful business man would not make him a successful President because his success was on the backs of the working class, in which he set them up to fail and raid the pensions for profit, lay off American workers and sent jobs overseas all for a profit for himself and investors. He saved the Utah Olympics by bleeding the GOVERNMENT of nearly 1 billion dollars in aid. He ran his state unemployement up to some of the highest levels on record. The only good think he has done was state wide RomneyCare that he will take away from the rest of us as soon as he hopes to get in. Mitt was born into money, knows nothing of anything else but money is power and is allowing his campaign to be bought by a handfull of billionaires. So as you shoot down all that is wrong in the world is Presidents Obama's fault, Bush gaves us 2 wars, medicare 'D", tax cuts for 1% all never put on books, we got attacked on Bush's watch, lost over 8 millions jobs under Bush & we watched our 401k disappear. Face your race issues!
