Marietta City Council Votes to Hold Current Millage Rate

Marietta City Council voted on July 25 to hold the current general fund millage rate at 2.788 mills for the period beginning July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 for support of city governmental and public operations. 

Marietta has one of the lowest tax rates in the metro area. The rate has been in effect since 2003.

The city's total millage rate of 22.728 includes the Marietta School System's millage rate (18.682), public safety bond (0.629) the $25 million parks bond voters approved in 2009 (0.55) and the city cemetery fund (0.079), Marietta's finance director Sam Lady said. 

"Keeping the millage rate low allows our citizens to keep their tax payments low," Lady said. "Marietta's capital budget contains only a contingency of $300,000 for items that break and must be replaced."

Departments citywide kept their operating budgets flat or reduced them, budget manager Lori Duncan said.

Council also voted to adopt and accept the fiscal year 2014 property tax maintenance and operations levy of 18.682 mills for the Marietta City School system.
