Marietta City Hall Open House Informs Citizens

Sponsored by The Loop Group, the open house provided citizens with an opportunity to review projects planned for both the 2009 parks bond planned projects and the 2011 SPLOST proposal.

Official drawings and maps of 2009 parks bond planned improvements and 2011 SPLOST city roads projects were put on display in Marietta City Hall for the Loop Group open house held Saturday.

City Council member Annette Lewis of Ward 1, along with her neighbor and friend, Council member emeritus, Betty Hunter, organized the event.

About 35 citizens braved the rainy weather to learn about and comment on planned projects. Some parks projects already have approved funding.

There was also opportunity to learn about the Friends of Brown Park; Marietta Police community projects; and The Loop Group neighborhood association, a casual collective of residents in the heart of Marietta.

Hunter, besides co-founding Loop Group, is co-founder and chairwoman of  the nonprofit 501(c)3, Friends of Brown Park and co-founder of the nonprofit Marietta Confederate Cemetery Foundation Inc. Hunter recently served on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for Marietta Parks, a 16-member, volunteer, council-appointed board that gave recommendations on how to spend the $25 million parks bond passed in 2009.

Brown Park, a public space that includes the confederate cemetery on Powder Springs Street, was awarded $419,000 of the bond. Monies will be spent on fencing, irrigation, landscaping and three bronze statues.

Proposed SPLOST roads projects attracted the most interest from attendees. The complete city project list can be seen here. Lewis said the maps displayed during the open house will remain in the lobby for a couple of days.

Comments collected will be passed on to city staff to consider, incorporate and/or respond to.
