Population Down, Crime Up

While Marietta's population decreased between 2009 and 2010, the number of violent crimes and property crimes increased.

Marietta's population decreased to 65,318 in 2010 from 68,037 in 2009; however, the number of violent crimes reported increased to 462 in 2010 from 433 in 2009, according to FBI Uniform Crime Reports. Violent crimes include murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Similarly, property crime increased to 2,857 in 2010 from 2,530 in 2009. Property crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

The 2010 results reflect a continued increase in crime rates over the last five years. In 2005, there were 331 violent crimes reported and 2,371 property crimes reported.

The number of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters reported decreased to 2 in 2010 from 6 in 2005. Aggravated assault has more than doubled since 2005. Burglary experienced a 69.72 percent increase from 2005 to 2010. Motor vehicle theft decreased to 166 from 397.

  • Murders and Nonnegligent Manslaughter: 2 in 2010, 2 in 2009 and 6 in 2005;
  • Forcible Rape: 10 in 2010, 17 in 2009 and 11 in 2005;
  • Robbery: 136 in 2010, 194 in 2009 and 194 in 2005; and
  • Aggravated Assault: 314 in 2010, 220 in 2009 and 120 in 2005.

Property Crimes:

  • Burglary: 723 in 2010, 610 in 2009 and 426 in 2005;
  • Larceny: 1,968 in 2010, 1,725 in 2009 and 1,548 in 2005; and
  • Motor Vehicle Theft: 166 in 2010, 195 in 2009 and 397 in 2005.

The population of Marietta was 62,215 in 2005.
