Marietta City and Cobb County officials and representatives from Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets celebrated the opening of a 41,403-square foot grocery-only store at 1137 Powder Springs Road on Jan. 16. Approximately 90 employees have been hired to operate the store, one of the first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in Georgia.

The store is strategically located within one of Marietta’s opportunity zones, which encourage new businesses to locate in the city or existing businesses to expand. When two or more new jobs to the state of Georgia are created, businesses may be eligible to receive $3,500 in state income tax credits for each new job for five years. Marietta has three opportunity zones.

"The city of Marietta welcomes, embraces and looks forward to this relationship," mayor Steve Tumlin said. "Wal-Mart is not only a good retailer and grocery provider, but also a good partner."

"One of the things we wanted to promote was partnering with the community, and we've already established several relationships with organizations and schools," store manager Wanda Shack said.

"We are so excited about this coming to our neighborhood," Marietta Ward 2 City Councilman Grif Chalfant said. "You can look out into the parking lot and see the trees that have been replaced," he said. "We have so many exciting things to look forward to, and this will help everything around here."

"I believe the name of the supermarket says it all," Cobb County District One commissioner Helen Goreham said. "It's all about neighborhood, and it all adds to the quality of life, and it's another example of this neighborhood turning around."

The new store is located within the Bellemeade Shopping Center and replaces a Food Depot that closed in 2011. Most of the existing buildings and businesses that were in the shopping center are still located in the shopping center.
