Chatt Tech Students Show off Their Skills

Chattahoochee Technical College Marietta students receive gold medals for Diesel Equipment Technology and Culinary Arts at the SkillsUSA competition.

Patrick Gangi and Carson Kiefer of Marietta were among the students to receive gold medals at the SkillsUSA competition at the annual State Leadership and Skills Conference at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Kiefer placed gold for Diesel Equipment Technology. Contestants cycled through 14 stations testing and troubleshooting engines, electrical and electronics systems, power train systems including chassis, transmissions and carriers.

Gangi placed for Culinary Arts. The competition encompassed both hot and cold food preparation and presentation. Contestants demonstrated their knowledge and skills through the production of a four-course menu in a full day competition.

“We are very proud of the students and their hard work,” said instructor Clint Cooper in a press release. “It is a great example of their dedication to their coursework and goals for the future that they do so well in this event.”

Additional Chattahoochee Technical College gold medalists include: Neal Cantrell of Kennesaw for Automotive Service Technology and  Kyle Cato of Hiram for Firefighting.

These students will travel to Kansas City this June for the national SkillsUSA competition.

Also placing at the state event was Matthew Gillelind of Woodstock, placing second in Industrial Motor Control. Shawna Payne of Temple earned the bronze in the Food and Beverage Service category.

SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the state level, approximately 500 students compete in around 64 occupational and leadership contests.
