City Honors Elementary School Poster Contest Winners

Marietta City Council honored several students from Park Street Elementary School on Nov. 13 for winning a poster contest as part of the Public Power and Clean Water Week.

The city of Marietta has celebrated Public Power and Clean Water Week for a number of years. As part of Public Power Week, Marietta reminds its citizens of the city's high value on local control over community services. Therefore, the city has chosen to operate a community-owned, locally controlled, not-for-profit electric utility. During Clean Water Week, the city asks its citizens to promote the preservation of the city's water through source protection and conservation.

In an effort to educate citizens of all ages about Public Power and Clean Water Week, Marietta's Board of Lights and Water held a poster contest for its adopted school, Park Street Elementary, which comprises grades third through fifth. The poster contest was judged using the themes below for both Public Power and Clean Water Week:

• Theme: "Why electricity is important to me"
• Grand Prize $100 - Emmanuel Castillo, Fifth Grade
• First Place $50 - Leonardo Hinojo, Fifth Grade
• Second Place $25 - Ana Cruz, Fifth Grade
• Third Place $15 - Melanie Flores, Third Grade

Clean Water Contest Winners

• Theme: "Why water is important to me"
• Grand Prize $100 - Martin Guzman, Fifth Grade
• First Place $50 - Sergio Vasquez, Third Grade
• Second Place $25 - Riley Markey, Third Grade
• Third Place $15 - Victor Martinez, Fifth Grade
