Fourth Annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

The fourth annual Cobb County School District Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition will take place on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at R.L. Osborne High School in Marietta.

Winners of the CCSD Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl will proceed to the Regional Competition, scheduled to take place at The University of West Georgia on February 5, 2011; winners at the regional competition will move on to the Division 1 competition at Tussahaw Elementary on February 26, 2011. The state final will take place at the Children's Literature Conference at the University of Georgia in March 2011.

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition is all about recognizing readers and sharing the love of reading. In the competition, students compete on factual knowledge of 20 books. Elementary and middle school teams read and compete using the Georgia Book Award title list, while high school students read and compete using the Georgia Peach Teen Reader's Choice nominee list. Although a team of five students will compete against another team of five students at the same level (for example, high school students compete against other high school students) the student that buzzes in the quickest will be called upon to answer the question without assistance from teammates.

History of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
Helen Ruffin was the media specialist at Skyhaven Elementary School in DeKalb County until her retirement in 1992. To encourage her students to read, she created a competition game based on the Georgia Children's Book Award nominees. The idea took hold in DeKalb County and grew to a statewide competition in 2003.ο»Ώ
