Is High School Tough Enough?
A report by the Center for Public Education says more than a third of students attending college have to take remedial courses in freshman year, and suggests that number may be under reported.
Are today's high school students being challenged enough? Are they given the education and opportunities to thrive in their future?
The Center for Public Education issued a report today that suggests many students, especially those in low-income households and school districts, don't have a chance to reach the level of "academic intensity" necessary. The report said that:
- A 2005 report said almost two-fifths of high school graduates “are not adequately prepared”
- Many students from low-income families lack access to a rigorous high school curriculum. A half million students in 3,000 high schools never have a chance to take Algebra II, a key subject on the SAT. Want to take calculus? More than 2 million students in 7,300 schools have no access to calculus classes.
- More than one-third of first-year college students take remedial coursework, especially courses in math.
