“David is the only Advanced Music, Band and Instrumental Music teacher among the ten finalists and is one of 155 local district teachers of the year who applied for the statewide honor,” said Marietta City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Emily Lembeck. “We are proud of all our teachers, however today David DuBose makes us especially proud.”

Under his leadership, the MHS band program has grown from 43 students to nearly 300. He has served MHS as Department Chair, Director of Bands, IB and AP Music teacher, and as a member of the school governance team, SACS Committee, Auditorium Committee and other positions.

“David was selected as a state finalist, on the strength of his experience and expertise,” said MHS principal Leigh Colburn. “As David’s current administrator, I have firsthand knowledge of his effectiveness within the classroom, as well as, his dedication to student achievement and the improvement of education. He represents our faculty with distinction, and given the opportunity, he would well represent our state.”

Over the next several weeks, a panel of judges will conduct video observations and interview each of the Georgia teacher of the year finalists. They also will give a speech at a luncheon sponsored by Georgia Power in April.

The winner will be announced at the Georgia Teacher of the Year banquet on May 3, 2013, at the Georgia International Convention Center.

The 2014 Georgia Teacher of the Year will travel around the state and the nation, serving as an ambassador for the teaching profession. The winner will also be entered in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

A graduate of Auburn University, DuBose earned his undergraduate degree in Music Education, and a Master in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix. His desire to teach, lead, influence and encourage others to succeed came from his experiences as an Eagle Scout and as a drum major with the marching band in high school and college.
