Marietta Student Honored at Turner Field

Seven Cobb County students were among the 83 students statewide selected for the $91,000 scholarship program based on a combination of academic success, extracurricular involvement and community service.

Brandi Whigham, of , is among 83 Georgia recipients of the Comcast Foundation’s annual Leaders and Achievers 2012 Scholarship Program. 

“Comcast is delighted to again award scholarships to Georgia’s best and brightest high school seniors who exemplify what it means to be a leader,” said Andy Macke, vice president of government and community affairs for Comcast’s Big South region, in a press release.

“We fully believe these 83 individuals have the necessary skills, talents and work ethic to accomplish incredible feats and become the next generation of movers and shakers across the business, government and nonprofit fields.”

The 2012 Georgia Leaders and Achievers recipients represent 53 different cities across the state of Georgia and were honored during a pre-game celebration at Turner Field prior to the June 15 Braves game. The celebration included remarks from Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and appearances by numerous state and local elected officials.  

“I’m excited to join with Comcast in celebrating our Cobb County Leaders and Achievers scholarship recipients on their many academic and civic achievements,” said state Rep. David Wilkerson. “These students have made a profound impact on our community through their leadership in and outside of the classroom, and I look forward to hearing about all the great accomplishments that await them as they further their education and careers.”

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides one-time $1000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.

The Georgia 2012 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners from Cobb County are:

  • Brandi Whigham, Marietta High School;
  • Anthony Reyna, Mount Paran Christian School;
  • Jordan Lanser, Lassiter High School;
  • Ryan Humble, Walton High School;
  • Caroline Traub, Kennesaw Mountain High School;
  • Sierra Carson, Woodland High School; and
  • Gavon Broomfield, Hillgrove High School.
