Marietta Students Register Better CRCT Scores

Sixth- and seventh-grade students in Marietta City school district top 2010 scores in all content areas on the CRCT test.

Riding the strong showing of its sixth- and seventh-grade students, improved its average scores from last year in 22 of the 30 content areas on the 2011 Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs), the Georgia Department of Education announced Wednesday.

Both the sixth- and seventh-grade Marietta City Schools students registered improved scores in all five categories on the exam, which tests students from third- to eighth-grade in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.

Students in third, fifth and eighth grade must meet or exceed grade requirements on the CRCT in reading in order to be promoted according to state law. Fifth- and eighth-grade students must also meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in mathematics to advance to the next grade.

In math, Marietta City seventh-graders improved their average score by 6 percent from 81 percent meeting or exceeding the standard to 87 percent this year. Social studies also were a strong subject for the class. Students improved from 66.1 percent meeting or exceeding the standard in 2010 to 71.3 percent this year.

The sixth-grade classes’ best content area it improved in was social studies with a district-best more than seven-point percentage increase in the average score for students meeting or exceeding the standard. Students improved from 74.1 percent to 81.2 percent in 2011. Students also improved by nearly 3 percentage points in reading and more than 2 percentage points in English/language arts and almost 2 percentage points in science.

Although the sixth-grade class topped the state averages in all five content areas, Marietta City students topped the state average in only 12 of 30 areas overall.

The eighth-grade class had the biggest decreases in average scores from 2010 to this year for students meeting or exceeding the standard. The math scores for the class dipped from 76.1 percent to 67.3 percent. Scores also dropped in social studies from 80.6 percent to 72.9.

“The CRCT results show that our students continue to work towards mastering a more rigorous and challenging curriculum,” Dayton Hibbs, the district’s assistant superintendent of operations, technology and assessment. “While we would have liked to see stronger performance in eighth-grade math, we did achieve gains in other content areas. As a next step it will be important for us to analyze the progress of students that were enrolled for the full academic year, as well as, students enrolled for part of the year.”
