Bond Planned for Marietta High Auditorium

The school board's plan for a five-year, $7 million bond depends on voters approving SPLOST IV in 2013.

The agreed Tuesday night to use a $7 million general-obligation bond to pay for a new auditorium at .

After discussing a few alternatives, the board decided on the five-year bond option for the 700-to-900-seat auditorium. The bond is contingent upon the SPLOST IV voter approval in a 2013 referendum, as the sales tax revenue will be used pay off the auditorium debt.

The bond will be placed on next year’s presidential primary election ballot.

In other business, Marietta High School Latin teacher Noelle Jenks was recognized as the employee of the month for his coordination of a three-week English program for 27 visiting students from Seoul, South Korea. 

In special reports, the and principals, Gabe Carmona and Jill Sims, each provided a Balanced Score Card report. Each showed a noted increase in almost all CRCT results.

Similarly, the superintendent’s Teacher Innovation Grant Report provided insight on a grant program that provided selected sixth- through 12th-grade science classes with a $2,000 technology grant, which was awarded to four teachers during the 2010-2011 inaugural year. The selected classes all had a dramatic increase in EOCT scores, rangin from 8 percent to 21 percent.

During the discussion agenda, the board voted to paint both and elementary schools' interior and exterior.

In addition, school board member Stuart Fleming was voted to the Ward Redistricting Committee, which is responsible with defining the lines that determine the city’s seven City Council and school board wards.
