SPSU Launches First Sustainability Student Organization

has formed the first U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) student organization in Georgia. Membership is open to all students interested in new technologies, systems and materials that aid in sustainable design and construction.

“I’m excited to see the students at SPSU take this first step in building their commitment to green design and education by establishing a USGBC Student group," said USGBC Student’s regional chair Adam Edgar in a press release. "With students investing their time and passion into green and sustainable issues, they are complementing their education while also benefitting their school and community."

The USGBC Student organization provides members with opportunities to build and foster relationships both on campus and in local communities while strengthening the impact of sustainable practices and policies. Student members will have the opportunity to connect with close to 80 USGBC chapters and affiliates within their communities and across the country.

Chapter president Eric Romeo, who is studying industrial engineering technology, hopes to recruit members from multiple fields of study, according to the release. Club activities will include furthering on-campus sustainability and recycling initiatives, helping students achieve LEED accreditation, touring local ‘green’ buildings, and networking with green professionals.

This newest student organization is a partnership between SPSU, USGBC of Georgia and the International Knowledge and Research Center for Green Building. Adam Edgar and Clint Mays, chief administrative officer for the IKRC, plan to launch other USGBC Student chapters across Georgia.
