West Side Elementary Named Georgia Exceptional Library Media Program

West Side Elementary School and Library Media Specialist Sherri Kenworthy are recipients of the 2012 Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) Exceptional Library Media Program honor.

The GaDOE recently selected four exemplary and five exceptional Library Media Programs, and named nine Library Media Specialists statewide for recognition.

“This program provides West Side Elementary and our Library Media Specialist with an opportunity to describe how the Library Media Program at our school is meeting school improvement goals and increasing student achievement,” said West Side principal Karen Smits. “In addition, it recognizes Sherri Kenworthy for encouraging reading for learning, reading for pleasure and reading for life.”

School library media specialists are teachers, instructional partners, informational and technology specialists, and school library program administrators.

They directly affect student achievement by collaborating and planning with teachers, and teaching information literacy and technology skills that lead students to become more effective users and creators of information.

“This is the second time in the last five years that a Marietta City Schools educator has been honored with the Exemplary/Exceptional Library Media Program recognition. Stacey Buckalew, currently an Instructional Technology Coach, was named in 2008 while serving as the library media specialist at Marietta Center for Advanced Academics,” Smits said.
