Camden County Knocks Out Marietta

The Blue Devils' successful football season ends with a playoff loss to the nation's sixth-ranked team.

The host Wildcats (12-0) showed Marietta why they’re ranked sixth in the nation by USA Today.

Camden County running back J.J. Green scored on a 63-yard run on the third play of the game, the Florida Times-Union reported, and the Wildcats quickly added a field goal and another touchdown after the defense forced a fumble and a Marietta punt.

Marietta trailed 24-0 at halftime and 34-0 after three quarters.

The Blue Devils avoided becoming the Wildcats’ fourth consecutive shutout victim, and sixth of the season, when senior quarterback Anthony Jennings hit Marcus Bennett with a touchdown pass in the final minute, the Marietta Daily Journal reported.

In his final game for Marietta, Jennings ran for 89 yards and passed for 195, the MDJ said.

The seven-hour drive to Kingsland in south Georgia was a long way to go for a blowout loss, but Marietta Coach Scott Burton told the Marietta Daily Journal he hopes that seeing a big-time program will help his returning players build on the foundation established by his 15 seniors.

The Blue Devils closed the year with a surprising second-place finish in Region 5-AAAAA, a , victories in six of seven games before Camden County and a 6-6 overall record.
