Cobb Boys Soccer Favorite Upset

No. 1 Lassiter went out in the first round, but Harrison, North Cobb, Allatoona, Campbell and Pope advanced Wednesday.

The teams rated as the favorite in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA boys soccer tournament has been knocked off.

No. 1 Lassiter, which had been undefeated and untied and had shut out 11 opponents, fell to South Gwinnett 2-1 at home Wednesday night. The Comets scored a goal with two minutes to play to register the upset.

The Trojans, who were ranked third in a national high school poll, ended their season with a 16-1-0 record.

Not far away in East Cobb, unranked Walton fell behind 2-0 to Central Gwinnett and could not recover, also losing by a 2-1 score.

The Campbell boys had a far better outcome, rolling to an easy 5-2 win at home against Camden County. As the MDJ reports, the Spartans scored four goals in their first 10 shots of the game. They play East Coweta in the second round next Wednesday.

Harrison also moved on after a convincing 7-0 win over Coffee. Next week the Hoyas will play Douglas County, which defeated Rockdale County, also by a 7-0 score.

North Cobb blanked Colquitt 2-0 to set up a second-round game against Druid Hills. Kennesaw Mountain was defeated 2-0 by Lowndes.

In the Class AAAAA tournament, Pope trailed 2-1 in the first half but rallied after halftime to down Dunwoody 5-2. The Greyhounds next play Gainesville, which ousted North Paulding 3-0.

Allatoona edged Cedar Shoals 2-1 to advance to play Tucker, which eliminated Osborne 3-2. Lakeside of DeKalb defeated Kell 5-4.

Heritage of Conyers defeated South Paulding 4-2 and East Paulding lost to Clarke Central by a 5-1 score.

The Allatoona girls also played Wednesday and defeated Heritage-Conyers 3-1. The Lady Buccaneers play Lakeside of DeKalb next Tuesday.

In Class AAAA boys play, Alexander advanced Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Lanier and will meet Marist next week in the second round.
