Golden Eagles Get Overtime Victory

Coming into Tuesday's game in eighth place in the GCAA, the Golden Eagles moved up to seventh place with the win and are just 2.5 games out of second in the conference.

men’s basketball team picked up a crucial road win at conference-leading Georgia Perimeter on Tuesday, defeating the Jaguars in overtime, 79-73. Thanks to a last-minute comeback in regulation from a 65-58 deficit, the Golden Eagles forced overtime after scoring the next seven points.

In overtime, point guard Brannon Hopkins hit a corner 3-pointer with under a minute left to break a 73-73 tie and help Chatt Tech (17-10, 7-9 GCAA) to a victory.

“I set up, and I knew it was going in right when it left my hand,” Hopkins said in a news release. “I was already at the half-court line when it went in.”

A Sean Tate free throw and an Asauhn Dixon-Tatum dunk off a Tate lob at the buzzer sealed the game for CTC.

The Golden Eagles fought back to tie Georgia Perimeter (22-7, 13-4) at halftime, 26-26. After GPC opened up its late lead in regulation, Hopkins came up with a key steal on an inbounds pass and drew a foul with 11 seconds left. His two free throws tied the game at 65-65 and forced the extra period.

“Once I got the steal, we had so much energy I just knew we were going to come out with a win.” Hopkins said in the release. “We needed it because we’re trying to get a comfortable seed and not worry about it coming down to the last game to make the (conference) playoffs.”

The CTC men have now won two in a row after losing three straight games at the buzzer and have a road game at Gordon College and a home contest against Central Georgia remaining on the schedule.

“To seal (the eighth seed), I feel like we have to win one of the two games we have left,” said head coach David Archer. “This game shows that our guys are beginning to be resilient and are beginning to fight for the duration of the game. That’s really important for us.”

Devarick Houston scored 13 points in the second half, finishing with 19 overall as the team’s leading scorer. Dixon-Tatum finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, and Tate scored 14 points and had seven assists with three steals. Hopkins finished with 12 points, and forward Chevelan Pearson gathered in 10 rebounds.

The team hit 31-of-41 free throws in the game, as Tate made 9-of-10 and Houston hit 8-of-10.
