Marietta Falls After 4th-Quarter Collapse

The Blue Devils had a 14-12 lead in the fourth quarter, only to succumb to a pass-heavy attack from Alpharetta.

started Friday's game off right at Northcutt Stadium. The Blue Devils forced two Alpharetta turnovers in the first quarter and later scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass to senior Ro'Mello Porter.

The Marietta defense stopped Alpharetta twice inside the 5-yard line, forcing the Raiders into two field goals. But with everything that went right, Marietta couldn't muster a lead at halftime and entered the locker room tied at six.

Porter added a 26-yard touchdown run to start the scoring in the second half, but Alpharetta countered immediately. The only difference in the game entering the fourth quarter was a failed two-point conversion by Alpharetta to make the score 14-12, Marietta.

But passing lanes opened up for Alpharetta in the fourth quarter. The Raiders scored three times in under seven minutes, putting the game on ice.

"They have some playmakers and they found a way to get their playmakes the ball in the fourth quarter," said head coach Scott Burton. "Offensively we were not able to respond."

Marcus Bennett added a 17-yard touchdown reception with seven seconds to play, but that just got Marietta to within 13 points, with the final score 33-20 Alpharetta.

Burton said that his team needed to do a better job running the football and being more physical on both sides of the ball.

The Blue Devils will have one week to make those adjustments before Region 5-AAAAA play begins. Next Friday Marietta hosts Wheeler.
