Marietta Golfer Enjoys Tough Round

Scott Davenport struggles with the putter in shooting a 76 while playing with golfers less than half his age.

WAUWATOSA, WI—Scott Davenport needed only one word to describe competing against a U.S. Amateur field chock-full of collegiate golfers: “tough.”

At 48, the Marietta golfer is one of the older players in the field, but he relished the chance to compete against the young guns.

“I enjoy the competition,” Davenport said after his round Monday. “I love the competition, and all these young men are good kids. I like being around them.”

Davenport qualified for the national amateur championship at the on the Cherokee-Fulton border in July.

On Monday, Davenport played alongside Michael Weaver, 20, and Stiggy Hodgson, 21, at Blue Mound Country Club in Wauwatosa. Davenport shot 76, saying his putter let him down.

“I hit the ball well, only missed three greens, but had five three-putts,” Davenport said. “I couldn’t get it on line.”

Het had one birdie in his round, making a three on the 339-yard, par-4 sixth hole. He had trouble with Blue Mound’s par-4s, finishing 6-over on those 12 holes.

The U.S. Amateur continues today with a second round of stroke play, after which the field of 312 will be cut to 64 for head-to-head match play competition through Sunday.

Davenport’s chances of making the cut are slim. His second round will be at Erin Hills, which can play up to 7,760 yards long.

But Davenport is enjoying his time in Milwaukee. He has been to the downtown area, visited the casino and says the people are “very nice.”

Davenport played in the U.S. Amateur back in 2008, and it’s safe to say he will keep trying to qualify for another chance to take down the next generation’s best golfers.

“It’s a good golf course,” Davenport said. “I had good people to play with.”
